Precision Weed Control in Turfgrass

We evaluate machine vision–guided spot spraying technologies for weed control in turfgrass systems. Our current research focuses on defining weed density thresholds, evaluating novel herbicide tank mixtures, and assessing targeted applications of nonselective herbicides to improve control of herbicide-resistant weeds while reducing herbicide inputs, minimizing off-target impacts, and maximizing cost savings for practitioners.

Emerging Weed Challenges in North Carolina

Bosc’s mille graines (Oldenlandia boscii), a perennial broadleaf weed in the Rubiaceae family, is becoming increasingly problematic in sod production fields. Ongoing research focuses on developing effective preemergence and postemergence herbicide programs for managing Bosc’s mille graines in sod production of warm-season turfgrass species. Additional efforts aim to improve understanding of the weed’s biology, including germination timing and the effects of soil moisture, seeding depth, and soil temperature, to better inform the timing and selection of preemergence herbicide applications.

Developing Novel Herbicide Programs

We conduct comprehensive herbicide efficacy trials to evaluate control of problematic weed species, including annual bluegrass, goosegrass, crabgrass, sedges, Virginia buttonweed, white clover, dandelion and other common turfgrass weeds, across a wide range of warm- and cool-season turfgrasses. These trials are designed to assess both weed control efficacy and turfgrass safety and are conducted in collaboration with industry partners.
